Review + Excerpt: Sunset at Lake Crane by Casey Hage

Love, truth, and pain lie buried beneath the Sunset at Lake Crane…

Faced with a blackmailer’s ultimatum, 19-year-old Erynn O’Neal protects her lover by disappearing from his life. Brokenhearted, she vanishes—and takes a life-altering secret with her.

Grant Alexander crossed the line when he took former student, Erynn O’Neal, as his own a mere two months after her high school graduation. Knowing the truth revealed would shred his career and reputation, he accepted the risks in exchange for the promise of a lifelong love. A heartbeat later, Erynn abandoned him without a word.

Years pass as Grant and Erynn lead separate lives–he as a reclusive author, she as an ambitious reporter. Yet, despite scarred hearts, true love lost is never forgotten, and Grant devises a way to draw Erynn back into his sphere of passion. Their aching hearts begin a tentative d├ętente, but old jealousies flare, devastating truths come to light, and Grant and Erynn must resurrect and overcome the painful secrets of the past if they’re ever to love again.

Review:
I had mixed emotions while reading Sunset at Lake Crane... Frustration over the situations Grant and Erynn found themselves in (and put themselves in), sadness over the grief both endured from the time they lost together and what happened during their separation-- lots and lots of feelings.

I like that forbidden and exciting feeling from reading books that have tropes such as this one-- a teacher student romance. Yes, technically they weren't together until after she graduated, but still, the essence of the forbidden is there. In this particular book, the characters are being blackmailed to end their relationship, and throughout the book they are fighting the bitterness from their separation and trying to figure out who their tormentor is. There are ups and many downs the characters encounter throughout Sunset at Lake Crane that become increasingly frustrating for me as I read, but I continued because I just had to know what secret Erynn was holding back and who the heck was blackmailing Grant and Erynn.

Through all the frustrations I felt, I recommenced picking this book up. You wont want to miss all the heated arguments and bedroom scenes between these two!

He stood in front of his desk, tension radiating from the ri-gidity of his shoulders when he asked in a rough voice, “What’s his name?” At the change in Grant’s voice, Brewster sat up on his bed and glanced back and forth between them.
“Avery.”
“You love him?”
She turned to him, hoping he would get the point when she said, “I do.”
She saw it. The flash of hurt before he masked it. “So it’s se-rious?”
“We own a home together.”
He shook his head. “That’s not an answer.”
She held her hands up, palms out. “It’s the only one I have.”
He stalked her, a predatory gleam in his eye. She knew the look—in the right situation, that look alone could get her half-way to a mind-shattering orgasm. Something she hadn’t experi-enced since him. Talk about the wrong time to acknowledge that only he had the power to turn her inside out with pleasure, almost to the point of pain.
“And what about us?”
Her heart tumbled in her chest. She held eye contact. She needed him to understand. So that no matter how close he got, no matter what he did, she would not back down. “There is no us.”
“We kissed,” he whispered. His eyes locked on her mouth. She struggled to keep still and not squirm under his intense stare.
“You kissed me. There’s a difference.”
“You kissed me back.” He laughed without humor. “There’s something. At some point, we’ll have to address it.”
She took a deep breath and tried another tactic. “Aren’t you seeing someone? I mean, you went somewhere Saturday night, a sleepover.”
He smirked at her. “I see someone.”
“So it’s not serious?” The words were out before she thought about what she had done, and his smile grew. She’d showed an interest. She’d screwed up, and his smug expression said he was celebrating his victory.
“I don’t do serious.”
His tone invited no argument, but the reporter in her wanted to know. So did the woman. “Why?”
“I just don’t.”
It was her turn to smirk at him. “Now who’s full of it?”
“Don’t,” he bit out.
“Can’t handle it?”
With surprising speed, he spun toward her. He leaned his face within inches of hers, the muscle along his jaw jumping. “Can you, Erynn? Can you handle it?”
“Absolutely.” She stood her ground, leaning toward him with almost as much aggression as he’d leveled at her.
“I don’t do serious because—” He closed his eyes, and when he opened them again she saw more agony in those their depths than she thought possible. “I’ll never give another woman enough of me that she has the power to gut me when she walks away. Not. Ever. Again.”

EXCERPT

She hooked one leg over mine, and I rocked my hips into her pelvis to let her feel what she’d done to me. Lacey groaned. “I take it you liked the massage.”
“What gave me away?” I asked, breathing hard against her neck.
“A certain wayward southern appendage.” She ground into me again, her hips moving against mine.
I almost chuckled. Almost called her out for being too prissy to say the word cock . . . until her hand slid down to my jeans to unbutton me.
“Maybe he needs some attention too,” she rasped against my throat.
I hadn’t come here for this and wouldn’t have pressed her, but I also wasn’t going to turn her away. We would take things at whatever pace she wanted.
Tugging down the zipper to her shorts, I was desperate to touch her and bring her pleasure. I pushed my hand inside her shorts, fumbling when she reached down to grip my denim-covered erection. Christ.
My fingers soon found what they were looking for. She gasped as I rubbed in slow circles through her panties. Even with the cotton barrier, I could feel the firm bud of her swollen clit. I sucked in a breath when she tightened her fist, kneading my hard cock.
“Together,” was all she said. But I understood. Only a little impatiently, I waited until she had unzipped my jeans before slipping my fingers under her panties.
I gave a soft groan at the feel of her hot, slick folds. “God, baby, you’re so wet already.”
“All for you,” she murmured huskily. “Touch me, please.”
I obeyed in a heartbeat, echoing her moan when she pulled my cock free and started stroking up and down with whisper-soft strokes.

Release Blitz: Consumed by the Dare by Casey Hagen

RELEASE BLITZ
CONSUMED BY THE DARE
CASEY HAGEN
RELEASE JANUARY 26TH

London Abbott, head librarian of the Bronx Public Library, is determined to turn a reading initiative into a raving success, solidifying the career and financial security she craves. Adding the burden of a tag-along playboy trying to improve his tarnished image is a stressor London doesn’t need, but when a trusted friend calls in a favor, she’s saddled with bad-boy football star Ryker Christiansen.

Ryker never imagined his lucrative contract with the Miami Thunder would ever be at risk, but after too many nights of partying he’s told to repair his tattered reputation or be terminated. Sent to New York to preen for the media and show his altruistic side by working with children and seniors, he’s committed to sitting in a Bookmobile with antsy kids, ornery seniors, and taking orders from a snotty librarian.

Unsympathetic, London tests Ryker’s mettle without mercy. He earns her respect by meeting every challenge she creates, proving he’s more than just one more overindulged athlete. But there is one more prize he’s determined to win, so he dares London to step out of her carefully constructed world for a walk with him on the wild side.

London expects to bring Ryker down a notch or two, but as their slow-burning heat erupts into sexual flames, the intensity of the fire threatens to either destroy their hearts or forge them together. Discovering which comes with a price. Will they emerge stronger? Or are they destined to be…Consumed by the Dare.

She led them to a bright yellow rec room with several sitting areas and three large screen televisions, all with closed captions turned on. A group of ladies wearing a colorful variety of track suits sat at a large table in front of the far wall made up of large windows. They held cards in their hands and in the middle of the table were…well, he didn’t know what, but those weren’t poker chips, real money, or pretzel sticks.
“They’re all yours. Don’t say I didn’t warn you,” Diane said before heading back the way she’d brought them in.
Ryker shrugged. “They look perfectly harmless to me.”
“Harmless they are not.”
Just as she finished her statement, he spotted a group of men in the corner. One was in a wheelchair, another with a cane, and the third so stooped he looked to be almost bent in half. Then the stooped man grabbed at the prosthetic leg of the man with the cane and ran with it when it pulled free.
“Ha…do your worst now, Cliff!” he yelled, waving the leg in the air like a club.
“Bring that back here, you son of a—”
“Hey, none of that, you old farts, there’s a young lady present!” This came from the lady in the red track suit, who had since stood and worked her way toward them.
“London! So good to see you dear!” one of the ladies at the table called out.
“You too, Miss Gertie. You look radiant today!”
Red track suit stopped before Ryker and gave him an assessing look. “Well, aren’t you a handsome specimen!”
She then turned to London and enveloped her in a suffocating hug. “Good to see you, honey. Did you bring them?”
London pulled back and straightened her shirt. “I sure did, Miss Maggie.”
“You’re such a dear heart! Thank you! I swear if I had to spend one more afternoon whipping ass at poker, I was going to lose what’s left of my addled mind. How much hemorrhoid cream can one person win before it’s enough already?”
“Well, I don’t know,” London said.
“86!” She pointed a wrinkled finger right in Ryker’s face. “The answer is 86 damn tubes of hemorrhoid cream. I don’t even need the stuff. Now, Cliff, that old shit, needs all the hemorrhoid cream he can get. He’ll need even more if Warren doesn’t give him his damn leg back.” She turned to Cliff. “You hear that, Cliff? I’ve got just what you need. Five bucks a tube!”
Ryker leaned to whisper into London’s ear, “Holy shit.”
She grinned, her eyes gleaming with mischief. “Still think you’ve got this, Ryker?”
She introduced him to “The Crew,” as they were called; eleven in all. Seven women and four men. The poor men. Lou stepped in with a look and, just like that, Warren returned Cliff’s leg.
Lou commanded the crew. An old mafia boss-looking type with a cool stare and deep crevices on his face that testified to a lifetime of struggles. Ryker imagined he was of the same ilk as the man sweeping his stoop from the day before. He’d probably worked harder in one year than Ryker’s own father had in his whole life.
Maggie, the mouthpiece of the ladies and hoarder of the hemorrhoid cream, took great pleasure in introducing her partners in crime.
“Would you be so kind and pull down Connect Four for us?” Miss Gertie smiled; the kind of smile that made him think of grandmas who baked fresh cookies and filled their grandkids’ bellies with hot chocolate. He’d always wanted a grandmother like that.
Just as he pulled the box out from under the stack, he jumped.
“Holy hell!” he said as he looked over at London. “Was that what I think it was?”
“Well, shit, honey, if you aren’t clear on what that was, I didn’t do it right. Come here!” Miss Gertie said.
He jumped back before the not-so-sweet grandma of the group could get another go at his ass. Jesus.
Maggie gathered the small tubes and stuffed them in her purse. “Where did you find this one, London?”
“His services were offered by my friend, Meg. You remember her, right?”
“Teacher, right? A little light in the boob department, but a comely girl, that one.”
Ryker didn’t miss how London glanced down at her own chest and crossed her arms.
“Yes, that’s her. She’s friends with Olivia Dare Rhodes, the executive director for the Miami Thunder football team. Ryker Christiansen is their best tight-end.”
“I can vouch for that!” Miss Gertie called out.
“Gertie, give the poor guy a break. Clearly, he’s not used to fast women,” Maggie said.
London snorted at that.
“London,” Ryker warned.
“I didn’t say a word.”
“Is it time to pick books yet?” he asked.
“Soon, Ryker.”
By soon she meant another two hours. Two freaking hours of poker with the ladies. This time with Efferdent. Ryker left the facility with two pockets full of the tablets.

TEASER:

“I get it,” she said. “I finally get it.” She wouldn’t look up at me, instead concentrating on her hands. There were a few freckles on the backs of them. I wanted to take one of her purple pens and connect them to make constellations on her skin. “Get what?” I asked. Her eyes came up to my face. “Why you’re so obsessed with me.” I raised both eyebrows, but inside, I was panicked. What if she figured me out? That would be disastrous. It would be the end. “And why is that?” I said, trying to be playful. “I’m mysterious,” she said, she wiggled her fingers in front of my face and the right side of her mouth drew up. Was that a smirk? Did Ingrid just smirk at me? “Oh, is that what you think it is?” After so many intense moments, this moment of levity was like a cool drink for a parched throat. “Definitely. What else could it be?” I wasn’t going to answer that. “You got me,” I said, putting my hands up as if I surrendered. “I’m a sucker for a mystery.” She nodded and I thought I spotted another smile, but it was gone quickly, stuffed away behind rigid lips. “Thank you,” she said, so quietly that I almost didn’t catch it. “You’re very welcome, Ingrid. Anytime.” I got up and brought her some pizza and another glass of water. I had the feeling she hadn’t been eating much recently. She carefully ate two slices and had two water refills. It made the color in her cheeks come back. “You must think I’m crazy,” she said. “No. I don’t think that at all.” I wouldn’t think that about anyone, least of all her. “Liar.” “I’m not lying. Look at me.” I would never get used to the way her eyes seared into me. “I don’t think you’re crazy, Ingrid. Not even a little bit.” Her eyes narrowed and I could tell she was assessing if I was telling the truth or not. “Okay,” she finally said. “I believe you.” “Good.”
